Pediatric Blood Disorder Services at Mission Children's Hospital

The pediatric blood disorder (hematology) program at Mission Children’s Hospital offers comprehensive services for the evaluation and treatment of blood disorders.  With a focus on family-centered care and a multidisciplinary team to provide complete services, we help children with hematologic disorders achieve and maintain the best health possible.  We are also proud to serve as our region’s referral center for the North Carolina Sickle Cell Syndrome Program. 
 
The pediatric blood disorders program requires a physician’s referral. If you have any concerns that your child may have a blood disorder please consult your primary care provider. For more information, please call 828-213-9770.
 

Our Patients
 
Our patients include infants, children and adolescents diagnosed with a range of blood disorders, including:
  • Anemias including iron deficiency anemia, hemolytic anemia, and spherocytosis
  • Hemoglobin disorders including sickle cell disease, thalassemia
  • Thrombocytopenias including ITP
  • Neutropenias
  • Congenital and acquired bleeding disorders including hemophilia and Von Willebrand factor deficiency 
  • Hypercoagulation syndromes and clotting disorders including Factor V Leiden, DVT (deep vein thrombosis), pulmonary embolism, and stroke

Symptoms of Pediatric Blood Disorders
 
Depending on the type and severity of the disorder, symptoms may range from mild to life-threatening.
 
  • Weakness and fatigue
  • Shortness of breath
  • Increased heart rate
  • Behavioral problems
  • Poor concentration
  • Increased Bruising
  • Bleeding
  • Localized pain and/or swelling
  • Swelling in hands and/or feet
  • Focal weakness

The pediatric hematology program at Mission Children’s Hospital offers comprehensive care that helps children and adolescents with blood disorders pursue an optimal quality of life. These services include:

  • Follow-up care for sickle cell and related diseases
  • 24-hour coverage by board certified pediatric hematologists
  • Medical care for sick visits and hospital admissions
  • Medical social worker for children and families with blood-related disorders

    Pediatric Hematology Referral and Contact Information

    Pediatric Hematology care at Mission Children’s Hospital requires a physician’s referral. If you have any concerns about your child’s health, please consult your primary care provider.

    Referrals are usually completed through a phone conversation between your primary care physician and an oncologist. Referrals may be made 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, by calling 828-213-9770.
